  • Getting started

The most important thing to keep in mind during a DIY drywall project is accuracy. To ensure you purchase the correct amount of drywall, record the measurements of the following areas of the room you're tackling. Measure once—and then measure again, just to be sure.

  • Wall dimensions
    • Wall 1 Length:ft.in.
    • Wall 1 Height:ft.in.
    • Wall 2 Length:ft.in.
    • Wall 2 Height:ft.in.
    • Wall 3 Length:ft.in.
    • Wall 3 Height:ft.in.
    • Wall 4 Length:ft.in.
    • Wall 4 Height:ft.in.

If your room has more than four walls, be sure to record the additional measurements.

  • Ceiling area
    • Width:ft.in.
    • Length:ft.in.
  • Windows
    • Number of Windows:
    • Window Height:ft.in.
    • Window Width:ft.in.
  • Doors
    • Number of Doors:
    • Height:ft.in.
    • Width:ft.in.
  • Start calculating

Drywall is available in four sizes: 4’x8’, 4’x9’, 4’x10’ and 4’x12’. Decide what size you intend to use as this will determine how many sheets you will require.

Now that you’ve recorded all the necessary measurements, visit the The Home Depot Drywall Calculator and plug in your numbers to figure out how much drywall you need.

  • Common drywall mistakes to avoid
    • Providing poor support at edges instead of adding 2x4 backing

    • Guessing at framing instead of marking the framing

    • Installing tapered edges along corners instead of using non-tapered edges only

    • Forcing the drywall over outlet boxes instead of trimming around boxes and then fastening

    • Cutting for a tight fit instead of leaving 1/8-in. gaps at edges

    • Creating unnecessary joints instead of using the longest sheets possible

    • Creating a joint at door corners instead of a notch around doors and windows
