The Home Depot has hundreds of styles to choose from. Once you’ve selected your tile of choice in-store or online, you’re ready to record your floor dimensions and calculate the number of ceramic surface and border tiles you need with The Home Depot Ceramic Tile Calculator.
Surface dimensions
If the room has extra nooks, closets, etc., that will need to be tiled, be sure to make a note of those measurements as well.
Tiling tips to keep in mind
Make sure your floor is flat, level, rigid and clean
Dust, oil, wax or grease will prevent the adhesive from working properly
Plan your layout so you start with whole tiles working from the center outwards
Choosing the wrong adhesive can cause breaking and crumbling. Be sure to use waterproof adhesive in humid rooms such as bathrooms and kitchens
Dotting corners with adhesive can actually increase the likelihood of cracking
Grouting unevenly or too quickly can result in grout drying before you tile the area
Apply sealer after grout has cured a minimum of 3 days
Miscalculating the number of tiles needed. You should purchase 5–10 percent more than calculated to account for breaking and cutting errors
